High Desert Virtual Academy is a 4th–8th grade virtual school dedicated to providing New Mexico students with evidence-based instruction from highly qualified New Mexico educators in a flexible setting that supports rigor, individual learning paths, and student growth. Through a strong home-school partnership, students develop self-efficacy and independence in mastering grade-level standards while exploring interests in STEM, vocations, and the arts — preparing them to become independent learners and thinkers who are career and college ready.
Literacy grounded in the Science of Reading and math that builds both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency — the practices research shows produce the strongest student growth.
Based in the Albuquerque metro area and serving students all over New Mexico. Live morning sessions keep students engaged, with afternoons for projects and independent work.
Each quarter, project-based learning, guest speakers, and community partnerships help students explore STEM, vocations, and the arts — building vision boards and future-readiness portfolios along the way.
25 students max in grades 4–5, and no more than 26 per class in grades 6–8, ensuring personalized attention for every learner.

We are not trying to replicate a traditional school day online. Instead, we focus teacher time where it has the most impact and give students the room to build independence — combining the flexibility families want with the accountability and rigor students need to succeed.
2.5–3 hours of focused, data-driven instruction in small groups. Teachers target individual needs in literacy and math and support social-emotional growth.
Students work through standards-aligned content on a vetted online platform that offers immediate feedback, repetition when needed, and acceleration when they are ready — with teachers available for support.
Students, parents, and teachers sign a success contract at registration. Teachers commit to data-driven instruction and timely feedback; families support attendance and engagement; students take ownership of their learning.
Progress is monitored through benchmark assessments, NM-MSSA, i-MSSA, screening, and project completion — so support reaches students early and every learner keeps moving forward.
Grades 4–8, organized into Elementary (4–5) and Middle (6–8) grade bands.
